Violist John Scanlon was born in  Boston and raised in Fall River, MA. He attended the Eastman School of Music and went on to get a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and a Master of Arts Degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara. During his college years he participated in music festivals such as Tanglewood, Banff, The Music Festival of Florida, Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds and the Yehudi Menuhin Academy.

John's first professional positions were with the Windsor, Ontario Symphony, the Rhode Island Philharmonic and the Florida Philharmonic. In 1989 he won a job with the Pacific Symphony and moved to the Los Angeles area. As a freelance violist John played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra and Opera Orchestra as well as the Hollywood Bowl, Pasadena and Santa Barbara Symphonies. 

As a recording artist John played for television programs such as The Simpsons, Star Trek, Jag and Matlock; with singers such as Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Garth Brooks, Aerosmith and Michael Jackson; and for over 450 motion pictures including Titanic, The Lion King, Jurassic Park and Dude Where’s My Car. He played in the orchestras for the Oscars, Emmys and Grammys. 

In 2000 Scanlon was hired to be Instructor of Viola and Director of Instrumental Chamber Music at the University of California at Irvine. Students of his from the university and my private studio went on to attend USC, the Colburn School, Eastman and Juilliard. In 2004 John was named Adjunct Faculty Member Of The Year at UCI.

Since moving to Tacoma in 2005 John has been a temporary member of the Regency Quartet at Pacific Lutheran University,  He taught and conducted at the Tacoma School of the Arts and was Instructor of French at Tacoma Community College. John presently has a studio of private violin and viola students at home and plays occasional solo or chamber music performances in the area. He also plays as a substitute with the Oregon Symphony.
